Is Hunwick done or can he be a capable 6/7 guy?

can't wait to see pens resuscitate JJ just like Shultz just to stop all the whining.

I think he can be a fine 6/7 guy. He just was a terrible fit for the Pens style of play.

I 100% agree with you. I think if he comes here he will be a good fit. Can't be much worse than what they had...

@ChrisMS: JJ has absolutely sucked for a really long time. His situation and Schultz's are not comparable. Schultz retained promise even into his final days in Edmonton and there were signs looking at his numbers that he could be resuscitated if he went into a different situation where he wasn't asked to be a top pairing guy. Jack Johnson is 31 years old and has sucked for at least the last 7 years since coming to CBJ.

I think the better comparison if you're bullish on Johnson coming in and being better than he has been is Trevor Daley, and even then, Daley was absolutely abysmal his second year here. Daley was a good move because it unloaded Scuderi. Committing cap and term to Johnson to be simply serviceable like Daley was is a massive mistake.

Are they trading for a 24 year old version of JJ?

It can if he's taking up $4 mil + in cap space...

I feel like the JJ talk is all smoke and mirrors. I can't see JR offering him more than the Huntwick deal and I think someone would pay him more.

Honestly, the only way JJ makes sense at any amount is if the Pens have a big trade coming involving Maata and bringing back a RD or forward.

I don't know much of JJ other than what everyone else is saying. But Shultz was said to be the worst Dman available at the deadline a few years ago, look at him now.

Would Thornton do a dirt cheap deal as a 4C to win the cup?

If JJ came to Pitt cheap, performed, he could get 1 last huge contract.

Am i missing something on Sheary?

This just seems like a really good deal for Buffalo.

I get taking Hunwicks salary, but if you bury him its only a 1.25MM cap hit.

Dreger said Pens looking at Rick Nash and JvR
- YouMeAndDupuis9

I've always liked Nash but I'm wary of him now. He always got way more poop than he deserved for "underperforming" but at this point he's legitimately breaking down.

Now, if the Old Man went out and got JV (frank)ing R I'd hoot and holler. I loved JVR even when he was a (frank)ing flyer.

I'm hoping Rutherford goes after Grabner now to solidify the top 6.

Nash is still a quality player but he's pretty much just a "safe" 2/3rd liner now. If you can get him for $5m or less for 2-3 years on a team like the Pens it would probably be a great fit.

That's why I am fine with a 1 year contract for him. After last season he can't afford to swing and miss with his next signing.

I'd be all for the Pens signing him to a 1yr $3M contract. If he lights it up he probably gets a 3/$15M in the next season. On the other hand, I could easily see Montreal signing him to a 4/$14M deal up front.

If I was in his shoes I't take a guaranteed $14M over a guaranteed $3M. Good news is if he does sign a 1 year deal, you know he is going to be motivated as hell!

I like the deal for Buffalo a lot. People will tell you how soft Sheary is and playoff woes or whatever, but he's a legitimately good, but flawed hockey player who can play either wing. He's definitely worth the $3 mil AAV as a middle six wing.

He just fell too far down the Pens depth chart. We are stacked at RW, and although our LW is kind of weak, he is not better than Guentzel, Hagelin, or Rust. We had to shed some cap, so he or Hagelin were the odd man out, and he let us unload the Hunwick mistake.

Honestly I think this is one of those few trades that work really well for both sides.

No you're not missing anything, Sheary didn't play well towards the end of the year and playoffs but generally had been fairly solid 2/3 line winger. This is a good mover by Botteril and bad by the Pens...unless they manage to use the space effectively (i.e. not JJ or Kunitz).

A Erhoff style contract wouldn't hurt my soul although it would feel like we kind of didn't try in free agency if we committed a solid chunk of cap for one year of Johnson. Any term on the contract would infuriate me.

It is definitely a good deal for Buffalo. If the Pens go out and sign Nash for 2-3 years at $5M it turns into a good deal for them also.

Id do Sheary & Huntwick for Nash and a 4th rounder all day.

There is something about JVR's game I don't like. He's consistently put up good numbers but when he scores he always seems surprised it went in.

I'd be ok with Nash on 2-3 years for less than $5 mil AAV. It wouldn't excite me that much but would have good if not great value.
